Though I am not Italian, this portfolio name of “Dolomiti” (Italiano) just simply feels right over the English name of Dolomites. Italian is a beautiful language and these incredible mountains deserve to be caressed with their more loving homeland sound. Bellissime Dolomiti!
The images presented here were originally taken on a trip here in September of 2015. These mountains are pure magic! Although their height or range in elevation is nothing to brag about (being from Colorado, U.S.), the dramatic cliff faces, pinnacles, spires, plateaus, and valleys are breath taking.
I’ve specifically chosen to present these mountains shrouded in fog and clouds as that is how they often and suddenly appear. It may be clear one moment and in the next 20-30 minutes the fog is creating ever changing scenes of mystery and awe.
The geographic area of mountain images here is focused in the region known as Alta Badia. Further recognizing their uniqueness and beauty, much of the Dolomiti is designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
A word on the crucifix imagery also included:
While I am not a religious person, the sense of sacredness evoked by the presence of sculptural crucifixes in these beautiful mountain settings is quite powerful. Though I find viewing this symbol of crucifixion difficult and am mostly unfamiliar with Christian theology, I respect the religious, cultural, and historical significances.
The sight of each crucifix in stunning scenes of nature (a dichotomy for me), somewhat surprisingly, brought me to immediately feel my own spiritual being, a sense of sacred space, and gratitude for life, earth, nature, and the universe.
